Averages for Riviera Maya in February
Like January, February is also one of the coolest months in Riviera Maya, Mexico. During this time of year, the average temperature is 23°C, created by highs of 28°C and lows of 20°C. Usually held during the last week of February, the CEA Annual Festival – Waves of Change takes place in various venues throughout Riviera Maya. There is a huge range of events and activities for the whole family to enjoy, including auctions, games, lectures, exhibits, music concerts, raffles, sports and gala dinners. All proceeds from the event go toward CEA’s Conservation programmes.
Cozumel celebrates Mardi Gras during the middle of the month with a number of carnival events, which conclude every year on ‘Fat Tuesday’ with colourful parades. In addition to the closing procession, the week is also filled with live music concerts, traditional food and drinks and a great party atmosphere.

Things to do
Animal lovers won’t want to miss the chance to visit the Tulum Monkey Sanctuary in Tulum, where you’ll find loads of animals, including hundreds of species of birds, ducks, horses, donkeys, deer and iguanas. You can explore the trails on your own to discover the open-air enclosures where you can watch the resident monkeys playing freely. The sanctuary’s tour is very popular and features a trip around the centre, a trek through the Mayan jungle and swimming in cenotes.
If you appreciate natural scenery, be sure to visit the Aktun Chen in Akumal – an underground cave which features bizarre rock formations and a huge natural pool. The fascinating rock shapes make this spot a popular place to scuba dive and snorkel. As well as the aquatic activities, Aktun Chen also offers a zip wire and numerous jungle trails which are full of wild monkeys and snakes. There are often many mosquitoes and bugs about, so make sure you take some repellent with you.

Hit the beach
Make the most of the fantastic weather and head to the beach during your holiday in Riviera Maya, Mexico. The bay at Puerto Aventuras is made up of soft white sand and clear, calm waters, making it popular among families. There is a top selection of facilities to enjoy, including sun beds, parasols, water sports, beachside swimming pools, bars, restaurants and dive shops. You can also swim with dolphins here.
If you want a secluded beach where you can soak up the sunshine in peace, head to Kantenah beach in Playa del Carmen. Vegetarians and vegans can enjoy unique meat- and dairy-free Mexican dishes at Restaurare in Tulum. Run by a chef who transformed his grandmother’s favourite recipes to make them vegan-friendly, this restaurant offers a selection of traditional dishes with a twist. As well as the extensive menu, this eatery also serves healthy fruit juices made with fresh, local ingredients.
If you want to try the local fish and seafood, make sure you visit La Malquerida in Tulum, where you’ll find a top choice of filleted fish, octopus, prawns and lobster. On top of the comprehensive seafood menu, this restaurant also offers a selection of Mexican, Caribbean and cantina dishes, ensuring there is something to suit everyone.

When it comes to organised pub crawls, it doesn’t get much better than those run by Playa del Carmen-based Party Playa. On this club-hopping trip you’ll visit three or four of the most popular bars and clubs, where you’ll enjoy bottle service to your table, VIP access and unlimited drinks. The guides will also take you to some of the hottest nightlife spots which most visitors don’t even know about.
Kool Beach Club is one of the best places to go in Playa del Carmen to enjoy a cocktail by the beach.
