May Weather Averages

Sorted by popularity:

Weather Lowdown

Spring is certainly here, and now the weather starts to really improve. The average daily temperature in May is 20°C, with highs ranging up to 24°C and lows of 18°C. The climate is certainly starting to signal that summer weather is on its way, and you will feel this as you wander around your resort or along the beach.

Puerto de Santiago sees 11 hours of sunshine a day at this time of year, which means plenty of time to catch the sun. Be sure to top up on your suntan lotion even though it may not be the height of summer right now, the sun can still have a lot of power.

Keep an eye on the weather forecast and you will see that the chance of rain is very slim. Only 18mm of rain fall during this month on average, meaning that there are just four wet days. This is great even for those on a two week or longer holiday, as it means the chances of getting to do whatever you like outside with no interruptions are high!

Over in the capital of Santa Cruz the weather is even drier, but this is also a place where you will find more tourists congregating ready for the start of the warm season. Be sure to enjoy your time on relatively uncrowded beaches by taking a dip beneath the waves: the average sea temperatures at this time of year are very comfortable at 20°C.

This month does not hold any particular distinction neither the driest, nor the wettest, nor the hottest, nor the coldest but that in itself gives it a strong appeal. The climate is mild and steady, meaning that you will know what to expect every day. Your chance of sunstroke is lower and you are also unlikely to need warm layers of clothing, so it is a win-win situation.

Where to Stay

The Royal Sun Resort is just a little way out of the main Puerto de Santiago area, but certainly offers a great place to stay from where you can easily move to the main beaches. You will most likely be able to see them from your room, as the hotel overlooks the sea! Now when the May sun warms the pool, you might also look beyond it and consider a dip in the ocean.

The Ona El Marques sits a little further inland, but is still within easy walking distance of the beach. Here you will find fully equipped apartments instead of rooms, allowing you to enjoy your own kitchen facilities and more. It's perfect for recreating the feel of a home away from home.

You can also find apartments in Vigilia Park, with plenty of great amenities. These include two swimming pools, a buffet restaurant, a playground and games area, a snack bar, and live entertainment provided for all who stay there.

Things to Do

The weather is heating up, so May is the perfect time to enjoy water sports in the hotel pool. The water will keep you cool, but you also won't risk making yourself ill by playing in the sun for too long. You can normally try volleyball, water polo, and even water aerobics just talk to the reception desk about the daily timetable.

For a night out, you could do much worse than Showtime The Sound of Musicals. This show is just a short drive away and plenty of hotels run excursions there, so it's a great choice for a fun night out. You can just go for the show and a drink, or upgrade to eat your evening meal there too. It's a parody musical which features some of the greatest shows of all time.

You can also head just half an hour away to Los Cristianos, where the market is a source of daily delight. If you want to pick up a souvenir made by local craftspeople, then this is where you will get it. It's worth an excursion one morning of your holiday.

Restaurants and Nightlife

You can find a great spot for lunch or dinner at the Cafe Jardin Flor Del Drago, where the food looks absolutely amazing. Whether you want a small lunch or a full plate, they will provide exactly what you are looking for. The setting is also magnificent.

The Martini restaurant is more of an upmarket spot, where you might go for one special meal during the trip especially if you are celebrating something big. This is one branch of a popular chain in Tenerife, which has managed to do very well by serving top notch food.

If you are able to avoid judging a book by its cover, then Los Arroces de Besay could be a great choice. Locals here love the food and many a holidaymaker has found a hidden seafood gem behind the somewhat rundown exterior. Don't wait to the end of your holiday as you'll wish you had found it sooner.
