Averages for Puerto de la Cruz in January

Puerto de la Cruz is located on the island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands and is a popular holiday destination for sun starved tourists looking for a spot of fun and relaxation.

The entire island is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean. Much of the island is urbanised, although there are portions of the island with a significant grade meaning the terrain rises too quickly for it to be habitable. As one might expect from an island, temperatures are fairly warm during certain parts of the year. The longitude and latitude of Puerto de la Cruz does place it in moderate temperatures with average rainfall, and many sunny days. In January temperatures are often 12ᵒC, with water temperatures at 20ᵒC. The average rainfall for January is 58mm. The sea water temperature does make it possible to swim, though it is best to do so on a good sunny day to ensure warmth. If scuba diving or snorkelling, wear wet suits.

While water activities are certainly part of the fun in Puerto de la Cruz, so are the monthly festivals held here. The Canary Islands Music Festival kicks off each year with bags of fun, music and entertainment. With an impressive run of 25 years, this festival is an annual highlight with conductors and soloists coming from around the world to play classical music. The month long festival starts mid January, often running up until March.

If you want an interesting, educational way to spend a rainy day, consider a stop at Museo Arqueologico. This Archaeology Museum depicts the life of Guanche, some of the first people to inhabit the Canary Islands. The museum offers replicas of cave dwellings, baked clay pots and adornments, as well as burial cave pots.

Hotel Gema Puerto in Puerto de la Cruz is affordable with modern styling and balconies for views of the city.
