Weather Overview for Protaras
Protaras enjoys a dry Mediterranean climate typical of
nearby resorts on the east coast of
Summer, from June
till September, might be too hot for some. The average high temperature stays
in the 30s for the whole four months, peaking in July and August at 32°C. Afternoon siestas are regularly observed to avoid the worst of
the heat. Night time temperatures usually stay near to 20°C mark and
air-conditioning is a must. Rain is pretty much unheard of and the sun shines
for a full twelve hours per day for the first three months, dropping to a still
plentiful ten in September. Protaras is somewhat protected from the strong
southwest summer winds, but out to sea they create conditions sought after by
sailors and the sea is dotted with boats of all sizes. Winds are usually gentle
in the morning, building throughout the day.
Autumn,
in October and November, is often held as preferable to the baking heat of the
summer. Still hot, with the average high at 27°C in October and 22°C in
November, Protaras continues to draw heavy crowds throughout the season. Rain
does increase as the season progresses but falls in storms that are short and
infrequent. Sunshine levels do reduce to eight hours per day in October and
seven in November, but that is still more than enough for long tanning
sessions.
Winter,
from December till February, is very mild, the average high not falling below
16°C. Night times are cool to cold and definitely require a few extra layers,
but it very rarely gets down to freezing; snow or frosts are unlikely. The sea
remains warm enough for swimming for most of the season, falling to 17°C in
February. Very light rain falls quite frequently. The sun is very much reduced, January sees around five hours per day,
but many clear days still occur. The wind sometimes blows from the southeast
and sailing continues.
Spring,
from March till May, starts warm and becomes hot. Mid to late spring is
probably the most favourable season to visit the area in terms of weather. The
average high temperature quickly gets into the low 20s and reaches an average
of 23°C in April and 26°C in May. Night times remain refreshingly cool. The sea
is still quite nippy until mid April. The sun shines for longer and longer. Rainfall quickly reduces and is almost gone by May.
Protaras owes its climate to its coastal
location on the Mediterranean, on the east end of
It should be noted that Protaras is an entirely purpose built holiday resort. It is minutes away from the clubber’s paradise of Agia Napa.
