PortAventura is located in Salou in Catalonia, Spain and is about one hour drive to the southwest from Barcelona. The highly popular resort and theme park is situated on Costa Daurada on Spain's Golden Coast. PortAventura is the biggest resort in the south of Europe and the sixth most visited theme park in Europe attracting around 3.8 million tourists every year. Spain's most visited theme park consists of PortAventura Aquatic Park, as well as four hotels along with two airports located about 30 minutes from the resort, including Reus Airport and a train station for PortAventura with links to Barcelona and Salou.
PortAventura theme park opened in 1995 and is divided into five worlds, each of which offers its own individual highlights. Each theme world is inspired by places from all around the world.
PortAventura includes the main Por Aventura Theme Park, Costa Caribe Aquatic Park, Hotel Gold River, Hotel PortAventura, Hotel Caribe and Hotel El Paso. PortAventura offers tourists the perfect place to enjoy family-friendly fun under the sun, and the fantastic array of rollercoasters, white-knuckle rides, water slides and much more will keep the whole family entertained.
The main entrance of the park takes you into the first world of Mediterrania. It features a number of shops and restaurants styled on a typical coastal town in Catalonia, as well as two rides. The lake provides the setting for FiestAventura, a show that features fireworks and floats that represent the four other worlds in PortAventura. The Far West area is themed like a Wild West town and includes a number of western-style buildings and sculptures boasting nine attractions. It's the largest area of the PortAventura Park.
Next up is the Mexico area, which is not massively different from Far West, but includes more thrilling rides like the El Diablo-Tren de la Mina, Templo Del Fuego and Hurakan Condor. The Hurakan Condor is considered one of the tallest free fall rides of the world, reaching 330ft. It has tilting seats, which makes the ride even more hair-raising. This area is themed around Mayan Mexico.
Then comes the Chinese area, which is one of the park's bigger themed lands and includes the largest ride, Dragon Khan, along with other rides including the Cobra Imperial, Fumanchu and the Tea Cups. China is also home to a Chinese buffet named after Marco Polo, which includes an amazing range of Chinese dishes.
The Polynesia area is one of the smaller areas in PortAventura and caters to more chilled out visitors with less full on rides being the order of the day. The Tutuki Splash and Sea Odyssey and includes two shows and fewer attractions compared to the other worlds. Targeting the younger tourists coming to the park is SesamoAventura, themed as the Sesame Street characters and features two shows and street animation starring the famous characters of Elmo, Bert, Ernie and company.
The PortAventura Aquatic Park is filled with huts and palm trees and is jam-packed with slides and waterfalls, and offers a special area for kids including water jets, baby bungee and little pools. There is also a number of restaurants, bars and gardens to enjoy. The Beach Club, is a good spot to relax after an enjoyable day at PortAventura Park or Caribe Aquatic Park. This swish club is located at Costa Daurada and offers heated pools and Restaurant Lumine, the club's gourmet restaurant. This club also offers a variety of activities, including aqua aerobics, aqua gym and beach volleyball.
The best time to visit PortAventura is a weekday as weekends and public holidays attract huge crowds and resulting long queues. PortAventura is an all-year round holiday destination and is great fun anytime of the year. The months of May and October are the off-peak periods in Port Aventura and so there are some great deals to be had. If you prefer a more laid back holiday and not too many crowds, April is the best time to go as it is cooler and quieter.
Climate
Port Aventura enjoys a Mediterranean seasonal climate and typically mild and temperate weather. The summer season gets very hot and dry with very little rain. The average daily humidity level in this season is around 63 percent. This place enjoys 9 10 hours of daily sunshine during summers.
