Arrecife Carnival takes place in mid-February, and this week-long array of carnival festivities in Arrecife includes the tradition of burying a sardine on Ash Wednesday, and parades of people dressed in brightly coloured costumes, as well as bands, music and dancing, culminating in a spectacular fireworks bonanza. Many of the main events are held in the Recinto Ferial, Arrecife's main showground.
Come late February lok out for Puerto del Carmen Carnival, a three-day event held over the weekend following Ash Wednesday, with processions of spectacular floats along the Avenida Maritima de las Playas, street entertainment and a notable gala event on the Friday.
Things to do
Marina Rubicon is one of the most popular places in Playa Blanca to enjoy a stroll and take in the views. As well as the high number of luxury yachts, speedboats and fishing boats, this marina is also home to many fish which can regularly be seen in the water from the walkways – especially if you bring some bread with you. There is a handful of cafes, bars and restaurants in the area, where you can enjoy a cup of coffee or spot of lunch whilst watching the world go by.

If you’re looking for a cheap drink or small snack, Cafe Aroma is the place to go. As well as a number of breakfasts, sandwiches, salads and cakes, this café makes kids’ lunches, complete with sandwich, fruit juice, crisps and chocolate. There is also an extensive drinks menu, so if you fancy a proper cup of builders and the kids are pestering for milkshakes and slush puppies, head here.
