Keep your eyes peeled on the 28th December in your diary is you don’t want to become the butt of many a joke. The 28 December marks ‘Santos Inocentes’ on the island, which is similar to our April Fools day with lots of pranks and fake news stories.
New Year's Eve, December 31st, sees both locals and visitors to the island bring in the new year with street parties, spectacular firework displays along the coast, and general widespread merriment. Christmas Eve is known locally as ‘Nochebuena’ and is typically celebrated with a family meal late in the evening followed by midnight mass. Many restaurants accommodate the festive and culinary needs of visiting tourists, although scrap any hopes for your usual hefty dose of Brussels sprouts!
Things to do
If you don’t want to miss out on Midnight Mass while you’re enjoying the festive season abroad, head to Church of Nuestra Senora del Carmen. It’s a Catholic church, however, the Anglican church shares it for their Sunday services, and for some special occasions, too.
Playa Blanca market is held every Wednesday at the marina and is the perfect place to go if you’re after some unusual souvenirs to take home as Christmas gifts for loved ones back home. Once you’ve shopped until you’re about to drop; enjoy a relaxing stroll around the marina before stopping for a well-earned coffee at one of the many cafes on the marina.
Where to eat & drink
When it comes to pub grub, it’s tough to beat Port of Call. This British-run restaurant offers a menu full of traditional dishes like toad in the hole and fisherman’s pie, as well as more modern choices, such as stuffed duck and fajitas. There are various themed nights held throughout the week, including burger and fries Tuesdays, chicken Wednesdays, mixed grill Thursdays, catch of the day Fridays, lamb Saturdays and carvery Sundays.
Plaice in the Sun is one of the most popular restaurants in Playa Blanca and it’s no wonder why. This British-run eatery is a classy fish and chip shop which serves a wide selection of freshly caught fish, battered and cooked to order. After you’ve chosen your preferred fish, you can enjoy it alongside some chunky chips and mushy peas as you take in the beautiful sea views on the outside terrace.
The recently-renovated La Chalanita Restaurante is a must-visit for seafood lovers during their holiday in Playa Blanca, Lanzarote. The two Canarian owners can both speak English and will be happy to explain any dishes on the menu that you’re unsure of or make suggestions if you can’t decide on one meal. This eatery boasts some of the freshest fish and seafood available in Lanzarote, including white prawns, sea bass in cava and lobster hot pot. For those not in the mood for fish, La Chalanita Restaurante also serves a variety of vegetarian and meat-based dishes such as fillet steak, Iberian pork fillet and duck confit.
