Averages for Phuket in December

The tropical monsoon climate of Phuket, Thailand’s largest island, makes it one of the top destinations for travellers looking for some winter sun, as well as somewhere fun, exciting and lively to spend the festive period.

Tourists flock to Phuket in December as the weather really starts to pick up. There is some rain at the tail end of the rainy season, but much less than previous months at around 59.4mm. Temperatures are a warm 23 to 31 degrees celsius, much warmer than a typical British December.

The Laguna Phuket Triathlon occurs each December, challenging participants to complete a 1.8k swim, a 55k bike ride and a 12k run. If that sounds a bit strenuous, why not buy tickets to the easier events, such as the pasta party and the alcohol-fuelled after party (participants can attend for free!).

December also sees the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta come to town. This is the biggest regatta in Asia and is not to be missed. Around 100 catamarans and keelboats take part in the event, celebrating the birth of His Majesty the King of Thailand. Events take place at both Kata Beach and Karon Beach.

The best place on the island to celebrate New Year’s Eve is Patong Beach. Crowds gather for a massive party, complete with fireworks at midnight. Hotels overlooking the beach may be expensive over the New Year period, but are well worth it. The beachfront Seaview Hotel offers rooms from £47 per night (expect this to rise in December) and all rooms overlook the beach - some even have private balconies which are perfect for a private viewing of the party and fireworks. The Royal Phawadee is also a good beachfront hotel in the heart of Patong Beach, and offers similarly priced rooms at £40 per night.
