Weather Overview for Pefkos
Pefkos is
a small tourist town on the south coast of Rhodes. The island
of Rhodes is located off the west coast of Turkey in
the southeast Mediterranean and is part of Greece.
Pefkos benefits
from a very desirable Mediterranean climate meaning long hot sunny summers and
mild winters. With more than 300 days of sunshine per year it’s no wonder the
island has become such a popular holiday destination.
The hills
in central Rhodes
give a sheltering effect to Pefkos and make it one of the direst and warmest places
on the island.
Summer
Pefkos
enjoys long hot dry summers with sunshine in abundance. Summer is the main
tourist season and visitors flock from all over Europe to enjoy the perfect
beach weather on offer. June to September are the main summer months, and
daytime temperatures are generally in
the high 20s and beyond. July and August are the hottest months of the year
with highs
averaging 28C and lows
22C. Temperatures can sometimes get very hot in the region and have been known
to get into the highs 30s and even reach.
Thankfully
relief from the hottest temperatures comes in the form of the Meltimi wind – a cooling
breeze that blows from the northwest. It is prevalent from May to October and
is at its strongest between July and September when it is needed most!
Rainfall is very low
in summer and in the months of July and August it’s almost non-existent. June
and September only see rain for one day a month on average. The summer months average
between 12 and 13 sunshine
hours per day. The sun really does rule the day during summer in Pefkos.
Autumn
Autumn is
a great time to visit Pefkos, especially October. The weather is still warm,
but you don’t get the intense summer heat. On top of that the resort is much
quieter than summer – this is a plus for some and a negative for others! There
is plenty of great beach weather in autumn and the sea temperature remains
above 20°C until late November – still warm enough for a quick dip!
October
has average daytime
highs in the low-20s and November around 19-20C. Even at night in late
autumn the temperature doesn’t drop much further than the low.
You do
get a risk of rainfall in autumn but it’s still low – October sees rain on 5
days and November 7 days on average. Sunny
weather is still abundant but you might get the odd quick shower.
Winter
The
winter months in Pefkos are mild but wet. The winter months of December,
January and February see around 70% of the annual rainfall. December
and January are the wettest with around 150mm of rain on average and rainfall
on a little under half of the days each month.
There can
still be plenty of pleasant winter weather however and sunny days can see the temperature rising
up into the mid teens. January is the coolest month with lows dropping into
single figures at night, although it never really gets cold.
Spring
Spring is
a great time in Pefkos. The mild winter temperatures quickly turn into hot
summer ones. Things start to warm up again from March and average highs into
the high teens, although nights and early mornings are still a little cool. By
May daytime highs are in the low to mid 20s and the summer weather really
begins.
March
still sees a bit of rainfall – about 8 days a month, but by May rain is rare
and you get an average
of 10 sunshine hours per day.
The great
weather combined with fewer crowds makes spring a great time to visit. A swim
in the sea at this time, however, can be a little bracing as the water doesn’t
fully warm up until June.
