Averages for Orlando in April

Weather low-down

In April the weather is hot and sunny, and if you are not used to it you may find it slightly uncomfortable. The average daily temperature for this month can reach as highs as 28°C (83°F), with minimum temperatures of 15°C (53°F). If you do find it too hot, this is a great time to visit the water parks to cool down.

There are around 10 hours of sunshine per day on average and the days are getting longer so you can fit more into your day. The average rainfall in April dips down to 61mm over the month and as it is outside of the rain season you shouldn’t be expecting too much rain.

April is one of the less humid months of the year with April 26 as the driest day. Although the high humidity of the summer is yet to hit Orlando, the sun is still quite fierce so be sure to protect your skin with plenty of sun cream. It is still a peak time for tourists in Orlando due to the holidays so you can expect some crowds, but it won’t be as busy as the summer months.

Things to do

If the heat is too much for you, why not head to one of the many water-based attractions. Disney World has two great waterparks, Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach. At the tropical-themed Typhoon Lagoon there’s something for everyone, from thrilling waterslides to a kids’ play area for your little squirts. Catch a wave in the Surf Pool, drift down Castaway Creek, snorkel with real sharks at Shark Reef and try out the new Crush ‘n’ Gusher water coaster.

For a real cool down, head to the snow-themed Blizzard Beach. It may look like a ski resort, complete with chair lift, but it’s actually an aquatic wonderland boasting one of the world’s tallest free-falling waterslides, a one-acre wave pool, as well as attractions for the entire family. Kids will enjoy the snow-castle play area, thrill seekers will love the Toboggan Racers and Runoff Rapids, and if you just want to chill out, grab your inflatable ring and float down Cross Country Creek.

Even more wet and wild fun can be found at the world’s favourite marine park, SeaWorld. Meet the famous Shamu and a family of killer whales in the Shamu Show, marvel as dolphins flip about in Blue Horizons and enjoy some comical walruses and sealions in Clyde and Seamour take Pirate Island.

Experience extraordinary animal encounters with penguins, turtles, polar bears, stingrays and sharks. You can even dine with these fearsome fish at Sharks Underwater Grill. If you’re daring enough, take on Orlando’s tallest and only floorless coaster Kraken, the log-flume style Journey to Atlantis, or the water coaster Manta.

Time to celebrate

There are a few events in April to celebrate the season as well as Easter.

Disney’s Epcot celebrates Spring in style with the Epcot International Flower and Garden Festival which runs between March and May. Learn tips and techniques from the themed flower and garden displays, admire the topiary displays of Disney characters, and watch artists from the 60s and the 70s perform in the Flower Power Concert Series.

For a unique twist on the traditional Easter egg hunt, take your kids to the Annual Marshmallow Drop. Held at Oviedo Sports Complex, helicopters fly over the field and drop over 25,000 marshmallows. After being showered with the confectionary, children rush around collecting as many as they can in their basket, which they can redeem for sweets and chocolate.

Movie lovers should see what’s going on at the Florida Film Festival not far away in Maitland. Each year this highly ranked festival premieres more than 170 cutting-edge films. Over the 10 days the event screens American independent films, international cinema, documentaries, animation and midnight movies. The film festival also features experimental new media, free seminars for aspiring filmmakers, as well as wine-tasting and gastronomical offerings.

If music is more your thing there’s the Florida Music Festival and Conference taking part in Downtown Orlando near the end of April. The event, which attracts around 25,000 fans, showcases over 250 unsigned acts of all genres. Top music industry innovators speak in seminars at the conference by day and scout music talent by night.

Eating and drinking out

There are a myriad of restaurants and bars around Orlando catering to all tastes.

For some entertainment with your meal, why not try Pirate’s Dinner Adventure? This action-packed dinner show is set aboard a replicated 18th-century Spanish ship anchored in an indoor lagoon. Surrounded by this are six other ships, where the audience is seated. Expect cannon blasts, pyrotechnics, acrobatics and stunts. If that wasn’t enough you’ll enjoy a three-course feast as the swashbuckling adventure unfolds.

If you’re in the Downtown Disney area there’s Bongos Cuban Café. This spacious Havana-style restaurant allows you to be a conga line leader or a quiet spectator. Sip on one of their famous Mojitos as you peruse their extensive menu of Cuban-style meats and seafood.

After some after-dinner entertainment? Look no further than Drip on International Drive. Performance art meets live rock ‘n’ rock music for this unique show where the dancers use sand, water and paint to create a vibrant display. You will get wet and messy, so wear old clothes. Enjoy a coloured beer or glass of vino and sit back and enjoy the show. No one under 21 admitted.

Or for a quiet drink after your meal, head to Giraffe Lounge located at the Royal Plaza resort for a full-service bar offering cocktails and pub-style food as well as live sporting events, pool tables, and dart boards.

Where to stay

There is a range of accommodation in Orlando, so you can easily find one close to your preferred attractions.

If you’d like to be near SeaWorld there’s La Quinta Inn & Suites Orlando South. Start your day with waffles, cereal, muffins or fresh fruit, head to the parks in the day and come back and relax in the pool or choose from 30 channels of HD programming in your room.

For those visiting Disney World, over in Lake Buena Vista there’s the Mediterranean style Floridays Resort Orlando. This TripAdvisor Award winner was named the number 1 family hotel in the whole of the US and the 5th top family hotel in the world. Take a shuttle Disney or Universal and come back for to chill in the pool or Jacuzzi while the kids enjoy the playscape area.
