Luxor is located on the east bank of the river Nile, lying about 800 km south of the Mediterranean. The city its self is actually comprised into three different areas; one the east side of the Nile there is the city of Luxor, just north of Luxor there is the town of Karnak and finally on the west side of the Nile you will find the ancient city of Thebes.

Luxor is pretty magnificent, the amount of monuments and well preserved ruins in the Luxor area is unparalleled to anywhere else in the world, leading it to being known as the worlds greatest open air museum.

Luxor is home to a hot, arid climate- much like the rest of Egypt. And much like the rest of Egypt the city plays host to summer and winter temperature extremes. Summers days can reach scorching highs in excess of 40 degrees, and winters can see temperatures fall as low as 4 degrees Celsius. Luxor also experiences very little rainfall, in fact it only records a minimal 0.1 inches of precipitation over the entire year.

Summer

The peak summer months of June to August record and average daily temperature of 23 to 33 degrees, with an average maximum of 40 to 41 degrees- scorching! Average rainfall during this period, like the rest of the year actually sits at 0 mm, so you are not provided with a cooling break in the form of light rainfall.

If you are in Luxor in the summer its best to avoid being outside in the middle of the day as the heat is blistering. By 9am in the morning it is common for the mercury to have already risen to 30 degrees, so keep your activities to the early mornings and evenings. Find accommodation with excellent air conditioning as the hot winds that blow in from the desert region can make life extremely uncomfortable.

Spring/Autumn

If traveling to Luxor during the Spring and Autumn seasons it is still advisable to pack light cotton clothes as temperatures remain quite high. September has a scorching average high of 39 degrees, and October and November see average highs of 35 and 29 degrees respectively, and average lows of 17 and 12 degrees. Spring is a similar story, May is the hottest month with an average day time temperature of 30 degrees and an average high of 30 degrees, and March is the ‘coolest’ with an average temperature of 19 degrees.

There is also no rainfall during this period. If Luxor does experience any precipitation it may fall in October, however it is rare and of negligible measurement.

Winter

Winter is peak season in Luxor and sees people flock here from all parts of Europe, particularly those wanting to escape the blistering cold in northern Europe. Obviously as this is peak season you will find prices will me slightly higher.

Throughout the season the days remain warm and tourists are provided with a relief from the mild heat as the nights can get quite chilly, so do remember to pack some warm clothes. The ‘winter’ months of December through until February see an average daily temperature of 15 degrees, and average highs of 24 to 25 degrees.
