Luxor is home to a desert climate which is hot and arid, much like the rest of Egypt. As in all deserts, the city plays host to a huge range of temperatures. Summers days can reach scorching highs up to 50°C and winters can see temperatures fall down to 0°C. Luxor experiences very little rainfall, in fact it only records 0.1 inches of precipitation over the entire year.

Luxor is located on the east bank of the river Nile, lying about 800 km south of the Mediterranean. The city is comprised of three different areas; on the east side of the Nile is the city of Luxor, just north of Luxor there is the town of Karnak and finally on the west side of the Nile you will find the ancient city of Thebes.

Luxor is pretty magnificent; the sheer volume of monuments and well-preserved ruins in the Luxor area is unparalleled, leading to it being known as the world’s greatest open air museum.

Winter

Winter is peak season in Luxor and sees people flock from all over the world, particularly those wanting to escape the cold in northern Europe. Obviously, as this is peak season, you will find prices to be slightly higher. Day time temperatures are warm while nights are very cool. December through until February see average highs of 23°C to 25°C and lows between 5°C and 7°C. It can get down to freezing at night and the wind often makes this feel even colder. While winter is not as sunny as the rest of the year it still sees around nine hours of sunshine per day.

Summer

The peak summer months of June to September see average highs around 41°C and average lows around 24°C. Day time temperatures often get into the high 40s. Average rainfall during this period, like the rest of the year actually sits at 0 mm.

If you are in Luxor in the summer its best to avoid being outside in the middle of the day as the heat is blistering. By 9am in the morning it is common for the mercury to have already risen to 30°C, so keep your activities to the early mornings and evenings. Find accommodation with excellent air conditioning as the hot winds that blow in from the desert region can make life extremely uncomfortable, especially if they whip up a sandstorm.

Spring/Autumn

If travelling to Luxor during the spring and autumn seasons it advisable to pack light cotton clothes and some very warm layers as temperatures range from very hot to chilly. October and November see average highs of 35°C and 29°C respectively, and average lows of 17°C and 12°C. Spring has a similar story. There is also no rainfall on average during these periods. If Luxor does experience any precipitation it usually falls in October in brief torrential downpours.
