Kerala’s extremely close proximity to the equator means the climate is characteristically pleasingly tropical.

Temperatures differ very minimal throughout the year, with average maximum highs between 29ºC and 33ºC.

Because of the regions closeness to the ocean and the existence of the fort like Western Ghats on the east; Kerala is presented with an enjoyable and composed climate throughout the year. The desiccated winds coming inland from the north generally create a parched setting throughout Kerala, but because of the Western Ghats.

Most visitors will be attracted to the climate in the Kerala coastal regions. One of Kerala’s main features is the coast is likely to see more sunshine and is less humid than internal areas. Unlike most areas of India; Kerala escapes the scorching climates with thanks to the Western Ghats that let off a pleasant, refreshing, Arabian Sea breeze creating Kerala beaches as an idyllic winter sun vacation for outdoor activities and water sports.

The winter season in Kerala begins with the end of the northeast monsoons which lasts from the end of November until the middle of February. During the winter months temperatures are still extremely high and have very little variance with the summer months. Winter in Kerala also sees very little rainfall and humidity. In the Highlands however where the climate is cool throughout the year, winter temperatures often fall below 10 ºC.

Summers in Kerala start towards the end of February where temperature starts climbing, marking the general beginning of summer. Relatively higher temperatures, low rainfall and slightly humid weather are the characteristics of the summer months. When compared to other Indian states where temperatures soar over 40ºC, summers in Kerala are quite cool and pleasant. Erratic rain accompanied by lightening and thunder is also another common feature of the season.

The southwest monsoon is the major rainy season of Kerala. This season begins by the end of May or early June with the onset of the southwest monsoon winds, resulting in periods of torrential rain for the next three months on average. Lying on the windward side of the Western Ghats and being the first state to be hit by the monsoon winds, Kerala receives profuse rainfall. Almost 85 percent of the rain is contributed by the monsoons. The inclines of the Western Ghats are among the places in India which obtain the maximum amount of rainfall. The majority of the rivers in Kerala are drowned with buckets of rain by the monsoons.
