Weather Overview for kefalonia
Kefalonia is an island which lies off of western Greece - at 350 square miles in size it is the largest of the
Kefalonia is home to a glorious Mediterranean climate, in keeping with the neighbouring islands. Unlike many other Greek holiday destinations such as Mykonos or Crete, Kefalonia has largely managed to escape the mass tourism that some feel has damaged the busier islands. Kefalonia has a more authentic Greek feel.
Captain Corelli's Mandolin is set in war time Kefalonia and was filmed on the island. This increased Kefalonia’s popularity as its beautiful landscape gained such wide exposure. Throughout the 1990’s the large island was home to the fastest growing population in all of
Summer is hot and dry with a great deal of sunshine. The temperatures really begin to pick up in late May and last right through until October. Between these months the average high stays in the 20s.
The hottest months are July and August with average highs of 29°C. It is common for the temperature to sit in the low 30s for long periods. August is also the driest month. While the island is in the path of the northeast meltemi winds, these aren’t as strong in the summer months so sometimes there isn’t that cooling breeze to temper the scorching summer highs. The water temperature sits in the mid 20’s - ideal for taking part in various water sports and to provide cooling relief.
Winters on the Greek island are mild but wet - it is the significant rainfall during this period that keeps the island green and lush for the remainder of the year. The average high is around 12°C and the average low is about 5°C for much of the season. December is slightly warmer than January and February, but also wetter and more overcast. Rainfall is high throughout but does decrease as the season progresses.
Spring and autumn on Kefalonia are very pleasant times to visit, though spring time is sunnier and drier than autumn. Spring sees temperatures of about 15°C to 18°C, 7 to 8 hours of sunlight per day and very enjoyable conditions. Autumn is slightly warmer than spring but sees more rainfall.
