Weather Overview for kefalonia
Kefalonia
is an island which lies in Western Greece- at 350 square miles in size it is
the largest of the
Kefalonia
is home to a glorious Mediterranean climate, much many of its neighbouring
islands, however unlike more popular islands such as Mykonos or Crete, Kefalonia
has largely managed to escape the tourist excesses which some feel have
somewhat damaged the busier islands. Kefalonia has a much more authentic Greek
feel to it and you will be sure to experience a more traditional stay if choosing
Kefalonia over one of the other resort islands.
Recently, the island was home to the set of the film Captain Corelli's Mandolin which is set in war time Kefalonia, so its beauty and scenery has been put on the map since this film was released. Throughout the 1990’s the large island was home to the fastest growing population in all of Greece- growing at a rate of 35 to 45%, with one third of the island population living in its capital city- Argostoli.
Summers in Kefalonia sees mild weather conditions that vary from warm to hot, during which rainfall is rare. The hottest months are July and August, with August also being the driest month. While the island is in the path of the local Meltemia prevailing winds, these aren’t as strong in the summer months so sometimes there isn’t that cooling breeze to temper the scorching summer highs.
The temperatures really begin to pick up come late May, and typical of Mediterranean climate the summer really lasts right through until September. June sees average air temperatures of about 28 degrees, before hitting 29 degrees throughout July and August and cooling to 27 degrees come September. During the summer months the water tempertyre sits in the mid 20’s- ideal conditions for taking part in various water sports but still not too warm to not provide a cooling relief.
Spring and Autumn on Kefalonia are very pleasant times to visit, with spring time being much drier than autumn. Spring sees temperatures of about 15 to 18 degrees, 7 to 8 hours of sunlight per day and very enjoyable conditions. Autumn is slightly warmer than spring but sees more rainfall.
Winters on the Greek island are mild but wet- however it is the significant rainfall during this period that keeps the island green and lush for the remainder of the year. The minimum low during this time is only about 9 degrees so you will really only need a light jacket to keep you warm.
