Lying in the Alicante region of Spain, with a unique microclimate that has been voted by the World Health Organization as one of the healthiest in the world, is the small coastal town of Javea. Javea sits on the Costa Blanca and its location at the end of a small peninsula which juts into the Mediterranean has lead it to being fondly known as the ‘jewel in the crown of the Costa Blanca.’

Javea is situated midway between the Alicante and Valencia airports, in the shadow of “The Montgo” mountain which is a unique feature that provides the town with a dramatic and distinctive backdrop. It is The Montgo that contributes to Javea having such a healthy climate, as the fresh mountain air blows down into the low lands and once it meets the coastal breezes you have a unique combination of sea and mountain air- sounds idyllic!

The locals have long said that The Montgo was once a giant elephant that has been turned to stone, with its trunk reaching into the sea. An interesting urban myth if you choose to hear it- although, the more you look at the mountain the more you will see your self making out the shape of an elephant!

The town, while very popular particularly with ex-pats, hasn’t been inundated with tourists and package holiday makers. There are only a handful of hotels in the town so most visitors will pre-arrange short term rentals and apartments for the duration of their stay.

Although Javea is a sea-side resort, it is a popular destination in the winter time as well. Javea is famed for witnessing the most hours of sunshine out of anywhere in Spain. So for those living in the North of Europe where daily sunshine falls to 2 to 3 hours in the middle of winter- the 6 hours of sunlight that Javea sees in January is a very appealing factor!

Winter temperatures in Javea are very mild- a standard characteristic of a Mediterranean climate. The coldest month is January, which sees a daily high of 16 degrees and a daily low of 6 degrees. December and February each see maximums of 16 degrees and minimums will fall to about 6 degrees. During winter the Mediterranean Sea still sits at about 15 degrees- which isn’t an outlandish temperature to consider swimming in!

Rainfall in Javea is at its highest throughout Autumn- October in particular which records, on average, 81 mm of rain for the month. It dies off slightly in November, before falling to 32mm in January and staying in the 30’s right through until May. By the end of May and right through into summer, rainfall is minimal, and July only records 9mm of rainfall across the month.

July is the busiest, hottest and driest month of the year in Javea and sees the Arenal Beach area come to life becoming a 24 hour a day playground. The city is divided into three areas- Javea Pueblo (the Old Town) which is home to winding narrow streets and abundant with Spanish culture and history. The Javea Porto (Port Area) which is a working fishing port in which large fishing vessels are docked amongst luxury yachts. An enjoyable place to visit and sit dock side in one of the many cafes. And finally, the busiest and most popular area is the Arenal Beach (Playa de Arenal) which is a crescent shaped clean sandy beach lined with cafes, bars, clubs and restaurants.

In the height of summer the Playa de Arenal will be a noisy hub of activity for all of July and August- so if you’re not up for a party vibe then it may be best to stay a few streets back from the beach.

The waters of Playa de Arenal will be an enjoyable 24 to 26 degrees, which is perfect for escaping the hot summer’s days. (see here for annual sea temperatures)

June will see the mercury rise to highs of 26 degrees and only fall to lows of 17 degrees, but by July summer is well and truly here with highs of 29 degrees and lows of 20 degrees. From July to September the barometer will often record temperatures over 30 degrees and the temperature can stay over 30 degrees for days on end.

During summer visitors and residents will bask in a glorious 11 hours of uninterrupted sunlight and only 1 or 2 days of rain across each month. The evenings are cooled with the sea breezes off the Med, which makes for a great atmosphere to sit beach side and enjoy a glass (or 5) of Sangria.
