Florence is the historic, picturesque and quaint capital of Italy’s Tuscany region, the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance.

Located inland in the north of Italy, Florence sees a humid subtropical climate- this is primarily due to the fact that its inland location means it is not tempered by the prevailing Mediterranean coastal winds that keep Florence’s coastal counterparts considerably cooler and milder.

The ‘tropical’ characteristics arise from the high humidity in the region caused by its location within a valley and also due to the presence of a river that flows through the city. In 1966 it was this river (the Arno river) that caused a devastating flood in which resulted in the deaths of 40 people and destroying millions of priceless pieces of artwork and rare books.

Summers in Florence are hot and humid with an average daily high of 31 degrees throughout July and August, followed by highs of 28 and 27 degrees in June and September respectively.

Rainfall is at its minimum throughout the summer months, so residents and tourists receive little break from the scorching Italian sun in the height of summer.

Florence is considerably hotter than its coastal counterparts due to its distance from the coast so the city does not receive the cooling evening breezes that blow off the Mediterranean.

Winters in Florence are cool and remain damp. The city receives the majority of its rainfall in the winter months and experiences occasional snowfall. November and December are generally the wettest months; December to January are the coldest months. On average throughout winter Florence will see 6 to 8 days of rain per month.
Spring in Florence is beautiful, with the flower boxes blooming, the grass regaining its lush green colour and the build up to summer begins. March see the mercury begin to rise post winter and witnesses an average daily temperature of 10°c. April warms up to a daily average of 14°c, and sees daily highs of 19 degrees. April generally has more days of rain then March but the rainfall is lighter. May is glorious in Florence, with an average daily temperature of 17°c and falling just prior to the peak tourist season means that May is a perfect time to plan a trip to Florence.

Autumn sees conditions similar to Spring, though you are in the midst of a build up to winter rather than summer so it doesn’t quite have the same buzz that Summer does. September remains warm and basically should be considered a summer month because the average daily temperatures, highs and lows are the same as June. The benefit of visiting in September rather than June is that the city will be less rammed with tourists and you may find some off season bargains.
