The island’s Easter celebration usually takes place during the month of April and is considered one of the largest religious celebrations on Crete. Each Good Tuesday churches shut their lights and take the faithful by surprise. In Good Friday the procession of the holy Epitaph takes place across every settlement, where people walk holding candles. In Saturday night, all churches feature a re-enactment of the resurrection of Christ.

Easter Sunday is a very popular national holiday. Tourists will witness beautiful displays of the country’s culture; grand feasts take place and locals commonly roast lamb, which is often served freely to anyone who wants some.
