Things to do

The whole family will enjoy the trek to Aitana Safari Park in Penaguila. If tourists visit between the hours of 11am and 3pm, they are likely to see the animals such as giraffes, lions and elephants being fed, allowing for some exceptional tour guides and at times, close encounters with some of prime safari animals.

Elsewhere, the Marco Polo Expediciones Jeep Safari is a day full of adventure through the many acres of eye-catching countryside that Costa Blanca has to offer. Visitors should bring their full driver's license, as this gives them the opportunity to have a go inside one of the 4x4 Suzuki jeeps. The trip will take travellers through winding mountains, deep canyons and rural villages. The option of a three-course meal during the experience makes this attraction all the more appealing.

Dates for the diary

In mid-July, the Jazz Festival arrives in Alicante and will attract many jazz musicians, both famous and those trying to breakthrough into the music industry to the area. Bars and entertainment venues that might not be known for hosting or even playing jazz music, open their doors and get into the spirit of the festival. The jazz fun continues until early August.

Also, in mid-July is the Virgen del Carmen, with many events focusing on fishing. The island of Tabarca is the centrepiece for the majority of the celebrations, and this includes a sailor's parade and the decorating of fishing boats.

Hit the beach

The La Fossa beach in Calpe is one of the liveliest beaches around. It's fine, golden sand is enjoyed by locals and tourists alike, and when dusk arrives, it becomes an improvised open cinema. There is a waterfront nearby, with all the expected amenities, plus a children's playground and a sports area to play ball games.

Eating out

La Finca restaurant in Elche has a genuine Mediterranean feel to it. The recipes are full of Mediterranean favourites and the restaurant is set in the gardens of Elx. This is a lovely place to come and wine and dine in the summer. There is also a cracking wine cellar. Bottoms up!

In the corner of the popular Villamartin Plaza sits an international restaurant, which keeps growing in popularity - The Club House. The seafood is excellent, and the Clubhouse fillet steak is also widely recommended. The menu is simple, but by being not complicated, it probably adds to its appeal, as does the intimate feel to the atmosphere surrounding the restaurant.

Nightlife

Nightlife in July is also bound to be high on the agenda of many holidaymakers planning a Costa Blanca holiday, and the KM Disco on the crowded Carretara Alicante-Valencia front is among the busiest in terms of crowds. KM can hold a 5,000 capacity and when the party begins, it doesn't stop. On entry into the club, the bouncers will issue wristbands, which will get partygoers into other mega nightclubs nearby like Penelope's and Pacha.

Irish pubs are all over Costa Blanca, and situated on La Zenia is the best known Irish pub in Spain, Paddy's Point. The staff have been here for years, and the excellent camaraderie and chemistry between them makes the customer the ultimate winner. There is some fantastic food to sample, a huge array of drinks to choose from, live entertainment and for sports fans, all the top sport on TV from around the globe. They like their football at Paddy's, as well as darts. Go on, try for that 180…

Where to stay

The Aparthotel Elite Sun Beach complex in Guardamar del Segura is a three-star property well suited to the various needs of a whole family. Among the facilities on offer are: fun frolics of mini golf, badminton and petanque courts, plus two swimming pools - with one entirely dedicated to children. Alicante town centre is around a 10 minute walk away, but the accommodation is an excellent choice with spacious areas throughout.

One of summer's most recommended choices for the entire family is Magic Aqua Monika residence in Benidorm. The all inclusive option includes use of the multi-sports court, an unlimited amount of drinks over a 12-hour period during the day, and a buffet breakfast. Entertaining activities include an evening mini disco for the children, a hotel-run children's club for 4-16 years six days a week, and many attractive water features in the swimming pool.

Should a villa over a hotel be the preferred setting for your holiday, Villa Poligono in Moraira looks to be a wise choice. Tucked away at the end of a private driveway, there is a modern kitchen with all the accessories expected along with a free-standing barbeque and a decent sized swimming pool. The lounge area can sleep up to eight people, so it is handy property for a group of friends or large family.

Self-catering planners might prefer the Estudios San Nicolas in Alicante. This hotel does cater for all kinds of guests, and overlooks the historical 17th century cathedral, Concatedral de San Nicolas. Or the rental of a two bedroom bungalow in Denia over the summer months could be tempting. There is an outdoor pool and an outdoor dining area to have snacks or meals in the beautiful sunshine, and is suitable for all ages of the family.
