During the month of November, tourists will be able to enjoy the Deepavali festival. This is Sri Lanka's version of the Diwali festival or the 'festival of lights', which is celebrated in India. It is especially important to the Tamils of Sri Lanka.

During the festival, the citizens of the island nation light up small lamps as the sun goes down. These lamps are placed outside their homes to prevent evil shadows from interfering with one's life and family.

After the evil shadows have been chased away, they light up small lamps and place them inside the house. These are to welcome the Goddess Lakshmi. The goddess is responsible for bringing prosperity and wealth to one's life.

Tourists will be awed by the beautiful lights at night. It is important to note that gifts are usually exchanged when people visit each other during the festival. Therefore, if you were to visit a household during the festival, it would be a good idea to carry a gift.
