Summer
Clear
blue skies can be expected almost everyday throughout the period between April
to October. The environment is always mild and warm over the summer months;
however ferocious heat waves are occasionally known to hit the region releasing
temperatures of over 38°C. The ever present Etesian winds that would normally
help lower the temperatures of other towns, in fact does the opposite in
Chania. The winds instead become very hot and humid and inevitably make the
overall climate more unbearable. However, one should never be fooled by the summers sweltering temperatures as the sea is always near by, allowing visitors a cool and refreshing dip at any time of the day.
Winter
The
regions mild Mediterranean climate succeeds throughout most areas of the island,
however just inland from the Chania in the mountainous neighbourhoods a
considerable amount of snow falls over the wintertime. Average climates however are much warmer than what can be expected in other areas of Europe as temperatures sit at a comfortable 11°C during the coldest month of January. Precipitation
throughout the winter is also substantial, averaging around 142mm in the month
of January. Unlike summer where the winds present are warm and damp, throughout
the autumn and winter months the northwest winds take over and begin to dictate
the average climate, which actually make them more pleasing and enjoyable.
