Whilst winter bears down on Europe, the Caribbean is getting into its tourist season with warm and dry weather on the forecast now for many more months to come. Average temps in December are an idyllic 23°C for the whole month, with highs of 28°C more noticeable at the beginning of the month.

The first week of December is the definite last spell of the wet season, so best to book for the end of the month if you want the highest chances of a perfectly dry vacation. Changes throughout the duration of this month are quite considerable, with a distinct decrease in cloud cover visible as the days progress. Chilly winds are quite common all month, which can make evening quite cool indeed, so do pack a jacket especially if you want to enjoy great dining al fresco.

Nigh-time lows will finally sink to 18°C during the winter time, which makes this the ideal time to visit. Yes, you may need a cardigan at times, but you will also enjoy a respite from the intense heat and humidity of the summer months. Don't forget to bring sunblock, as the UV index may be low but the sun can still pack a considerable punch.

Only 32 mm of rain falls in December across 7 days out of the month on average and you'll enjoy superlative sea temps of 27°C and a total of 7 hours of daily sunshine

Being high season means that you'll need to book quite ahead of time, although if you're not too fussy you'll always find somewhere to stay given that the island boasts thousands of rooms.

For beautiful 4* service and inclusions, head to the Hotel Laguna Cayo Coco which boasts a 600 meter long stretch of clean and perfect beach. This hotel is designed around a lagoon and has two lovely swimming pools for times when you don't feel like getting your feet all sandy. The entire landscape here is pristine, natural and tropical and the resort has quite a few accommodation options for you to choose from. For a special splurge, consider booking an overwater-bungalow...they are superb!

For a rustic stay, opt for the Hotel Colonial Cayo Coco instead, which has been recently refurbished and designed in stunning colonial style. This place is simply divine and ideal for those who wish to stay in a smaller yet more charming place. The cobblestone paths, however, may not make it ideal for those with diminished mobility, so do keep that in mind. Don't let the 'smaller' tag put you off however, the Hotel Colonial still boasts over 400 rooms and 11 restaurants and bars in total.

Things to do in Cayo Coco in December

The world is your Cuban oyster in December, as this is the time of year where everything is on offer. This entire region is a scuba diver's paradise, and at this time of year brilliant dives are possible every single day, due to the lack of heavy rains. If you prefer to stay on the surface of the water, do note that Cayo Coco is home to an incredibly revered coral reef, which is brimming with colourful and endemic coral and fish; getting the most out of it whilst snorkelling is also extremely rewarding, as the visibility in December is top notch. Those who are really adamant not to get wet can enjoy a leisurely afternoon aboard a glass-bottom boat instead.

Although this is a natural playground for the most part, history and culture fans can also get a hit of their favoured past-time. Daily sightseeing trips to nearby cities can be arranged, where you can be guided on an enlightening tour of an old colonial hub, as well as a cigar making factory, crocodile farm and more.

All of these activities are very easy to arrange through the guest activities' desk of whichever resort you choose to stay in.
