Weather Overview for Caen

Caen is a small town located in the Basse Normandie region in northwestern France.

The historic city, home to the grave of William the Conqueror, is famous for is buildings that were built during the reign of William the Conqueror. Unfortunately during the Battle of Normandy in 1944, much of the town was destroyed by heavy fighting which took place though there are still countless picturesque buildings scattered throughout the town.

Caen lies north facing 15km back from the English Channel, upon the Orne river. The river flows through the city, as well as different smaller buried rivers that are known as les Odons. As a result of its location above and near a considerable amount of water it lies within an area of high humidity, this results in Caen experiencing high relative humidity all year round.

Summer

Summer weather in Caen starts in June, but doesn’t really kick into action until early July. June sees the city basking in glorious highs of 19 degrees with comfortable minimums of 11 degrees. July brings the real summer weather and with that weather comes the tourist peak season- so keep in mind prices will be higher and the area significantly more busy.

Average daily temperature in July and August is 17 degrees, with an average high of 21 to 22 degrees. Rain is generally fairly constant throughout the year in Caen, though it is often at its lowest during July and August.

Winter

The winter months can bring quite chilly weather to the town, however due to its proximity to the coast conditions are kept slightly more mild than its inland counterparts.

December through until February see an average daily temperature of 5 degrees, with the minimum temperature falling to 2 degrees. It is rare for the temperature to fall below freezing, though it has happened in the past.

Rainfall does pick up slightly in the winter months, though it tends to be heaviest during the month of November.

Autumn/Spring

Anywhere in France is amazing during Spring- the trees are blossoming, the grass is greener the flowers have come to life with colour. Caen is no different. The Spring months play host to beautiful conditions (albeit, continued rainfall) and also the town will be less busy as this season is just prior to the peak summer months. The chilly winter temps begin to die off in March and the average temperature sits at a still brisk 7 degrees. Moving into April the daily temperature rises slightly to 9 degrees, before rising again to 12 degrees by May.

The autumn months are generally slightly warmer than Spring, with summer conditions generally carrying through into September which sees daily highs of 19 degrees. September is really the fourth month of summer rather than the first month of autumn as the conditions throughout September have a tendency to be very similar to the conditions in June.

The mercury begins to fall in October, though the average daily maximum still sits at an enjoyable 15 degrees. In November rainfall picks up, the daily temperature falls to 7 degrees and winter begins to set in.
