Borneo; located in the centre of southeast Asia enjoys an equatorial climate that provides high humidity, hot weather and proficient rainfall amounts throughout the year. Located on both sides of the equator and conquered by lavish rainforests, Borneo is the third largest island in the world, its terrain distributed unevenly between the countries of Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei. Better known as tropical paradise!

Throughout the region; Borneo’s tropical climate can at times be much unexpected. Sarawak features a monsoon season from the months of October until February meanwhile Sabah’s rainiest period of time is from November to February. This however should not discourage visitors, the rain may on occasions be heavy but occurrence is irregular and can in fact be cooling from the humidity. Both tourists and residents should be prepared for rain at anytime of the year.

Daytime temperatures will generally range between 30°C and 35°C whilst in the Mount Kinabalu region the temperature drops to 15°C to 22°C. Sabah, located on the most northern tip of Borneo, will frequently experience harsher rainfall whereas Sarawak has enjoys more placid and serene weather. Cooling seas breezes are also a benefit for typical tropical climates resulting in an appropriate destination to visit at any time of the year, with of course the exemption of particular coastal locations and islands that come intact with the rains of the monsoon season.

Monsoons

For Sabah, the months of November until January bring the Northeast Monsoon season which results in heavy rains and violet storms. From February through until April, the weather takes a turn becoming relatively dry from the dried out winds that blow inland from the Pacific Ocean. Mount Kinabalu on the other hand, is still located in Sabah but gives the coldest temperatures making the region a popular tourist destination.

Sarawak, conversely, lies at the north-western side of Borneo, and features quite a diverse climate with slightly less rainfall. For example, June until August are the months when Sarawak is at its driest while December to March is when it is most wet.

Given that temperatures rarely fall below 30°C; Borneo is an enjoyable year round destination. March to November is generally the most advantageous months to benefit from the most sunshine; where as December to February can be unpredictable. Nevertheless, a day without any sunshine is uncommon making Borneo a pleasurable vacation at any time of the year.
