Weather Overview for Blackpool

Blackpool is a popular English sea side town that lies within Lancashire in the North West of England. Sitting upon the Irish Sea, Blackpool is home to vibrant night life and a large array of tourist attractions. While the city is still the most popular sea side resort in the UK, some may say that Blackpool’s glamour and excitement is fading. Blackpool is home to several vibrant piers which host various attractions, the Central Pier has a large Ferris wheel on which you can take in an amazing view up the coast, the South Pier houses a theme park, and there are plenty of cafes and restaurants scattered along the beach and the piers.

The introduction of cheap international flights in the 1970’s hit Blackpool hard as commuters could now travel to Spain for the same cost as a trip within their home country. However, whatever your take on Blackpool is the attractions are still present, the coast is beautiful and the weather is still your standard British coastal weather!

Summer

Because of its northerly location the temperatures experienced in Blackpool are generally cooler than those seen in southern England. Summer sees average daily temperatures of about 14 ºC to 16 ºC, with August generally being the warmest month. Average daily highs normally sit at 18 ºC, though it’s not entirely uncommon for the mercury to sit in the 20’s for several days throughout the height of the season. Rainfall is a constant presence throughout the year in Blackpool, not dissimilar to the rest of the country! If you’re after a sea side trip where you are guaranteed no rainfall then Blackpool may not be the place for you. However on average July does record one of the lowest amount of precipitation, before picking up in Autumn which is typically the rainiest period. While in the summer months sunny periods can occasionally be broken up with periods of rainfall, beautiful clear days are still plentiful and periods of rain are often nothing more than short showers. There are countless warm clear days which you can utilise to explore Blackpool’s many attractions. While summers are generally pleasant, occasionally wet with plenty of warm days- 2007 did see a summer of heavy rainfall throughout England particularly in the North West and the midlands. The high rainfall experienced in many regions, especially during June and July, lead to it being the wettest summer since the national and regional rainfall series began in 1914. In addition to this summer 2007 was the coolest since 1998.

Winter

Rainfall picks up in October, which is on average the rainiest month of the year; this also coincides with the mercury beginning to fall and winter setting in. The wintertime in Blackpool generally sees mild temperatures, though there can be some gusty wet periods. Many days throughout winter can see heavy rainfall and strong winds, though in the unpredictable fashion of English weather one day of strong winds and rain could be followed by a clear day of sun and blue skies. Winter sees lows of 2 ºC to 3 ºC and highs of 6 ºC to 7 ºC, with January typically being the coldest month.
