Berlin, the capital city of Germany in the northeast of the country, has a temperate continental climate. Berlin receives all four seasons with warm summers and cold winters and moderate rainfall all year round. This does not mean Berlin is a particularly wet city as the amount of water that falls is not high, but there is no dependably dry season in which to visit.

Summer in Berlin, from June till August, sees average highs in the low 20s. It can sometimes get up into the high 20s but night times are usually very cool. June and August see rain as frequently as at any other time of year, but rainfall levels are higher making them the wettest months in Berlin. However, Berlin’s summer does usually offer some long periods of proper summer weather with heat and sunshine. The rain usually falls in short showers and when it comes the sun stays out for longer than the average seven hours a day.

Autumn starts in September and sees average high temperatures dropping from 19°C to 7°C in November. The weather generally becomes unpredictable and overcast – just a taster for Berlin’s unpleasant winter. In September the sun comes out for around five hours a day, but my November this has dwindled to two hours. In November precipitation levels are the same as always but more frequent.

Winter is an upsetting time in Berlin. December sees one hour of sunshine per day. This is generally considered unacceptable but no amount of abuse seems to disperse the thick grey clouds that become so enamoured with the city at this time of year. It gets windy and cold, around 2°C, but not usually cold enough for the snow to settle for long, resulting in dirty slush that causes small children to cry at roadsides. Night time lows around -3°C cause frequent frosts and icy roads. Please, don’t let this put you off; Berlin is a wonderful city that people visit year round for its rich cultural attractions.

Spring time sees hope returning with the sun. From March four hours of sunshine can be expected each day, and by May a respectable seven hours is often shared out over wet days and whole days of brilliant sunshine. It warms up from an average high temperature of 8°C in March, to 13°C in April and a pleasant 19°C in May. Night times remain cold.

Eastern areas of Germany are generally colder than western regions but the city of Berlin is usually a bit warmer than surrounding areas, as in all urban areas, due to the insulating effect of the many large buildings and roads.
