Weather lowdown

April sees temperatures begin to climb as spring arrives in Benalmadena and more resorts begin opening up towards the end of the month. Winter was not too bad by any means, but it’s April that marks the beginning of the warmer part of the year in this very popular resort town on Spain’s Costa del Sol, about 12 kilometres south of Malaga.

Temperatures are undeniably comfortable in the afternoon this time of year. The average high temperature is 23°C. The average low temperature is 9°C. May will see things continue to warm up—it will be 13°C at night then. In the course of April, both the high and low averages tend to increase by about two degrees. The overall average temperature is now 16°C, a two-degree increase since March. April is the first month that sees the sea temperature increase. After averaging 16°C for three month—that annual minimum—it now averages 17°C.

Cloud cover ranges around 41% this month, which is still relatively high. It’s pretty much as cloudy as a month can get in these parts. However, the sky is still (mostly) clear 46% of the time in April, which points out the incredible sunniness of the Costa del Sol—a region with a name that couldn’t be more appropriate. There are 10 beautiful hours of sunshine per day on average in April.

When it comes to rainfall, April experiences a peak in the total amount of precipitation. While March received 37mm in total and May will receive 34mm in total, April somehow has a total amount of rainfall of 58mm, which actually makes it the fourth wettest month of the year. There are 10 days with precipitation this month. The likelihood of experiencing rainfall throughout April ranges around 26% and doesn’t vary all that much. There is a slight drop toward the end of the month, though. Moderate rain is by far the most common type of rainfall, occurring on 44% of the days with rainfall. Light rain regularly falls as well, on 23% of those days. Thunderstorms and drizzle are less likely, but are known to occasionally occur, respectively on 16% and 12% of the days with rainfall.
