Weather Overview for Ascona

The town of Ascona is located in the district of Locarno in the canton of Ticinio in the country of southern Switzerland.  It lies on the banks of Lake Maggiore which is a large lake to the south side of the Alps.  It is the largest lake of Italy and second largest of the southern Switzerland.  Ascona is Switzerland’s lowest lying town. 

The town was built around the 16^th century church of San Pietro e Paolo and was once a former fishing village but is now a popular tourist destination where people visit for the weather, attractions and culture.

The topography in Ascona is mountainess with a panorama of the lake and the Alps making it a beautiful setting.

The weather in Ascona is a mild Mediterranean climate of sunny days, moderate rainfall and occasional snow.  Due to its location with the Alps temperatures can be quite cool across the seasons.

There is a temperate microclimate prevailing over the lake with the Alps protecting it from the cold northern air.  During the winter the lake helps to keep temperatures higher as the water releases heat energy slower than air.  The temperatures are cooled down in the summer by the breezes which blow on the water’s surface.

In Summer in Ascona you can expect temperatures to range from average highs of 25⁰C to 27⁰C.  Temperatures in this season are not likely to drop below lows of 14⁰C.  This season does receive 10 to 12 days of rainfall per month, with the wettest month being June.  You can expect up to 9 hours of daily sunshine hours.  The hottest months are July / August with June being the coolest. 

In Autumn temperatures start to decrease with September reaching average highs of 23⁰C but November dropping to average highs of 11⁰C.  In this season rainfall does decrease with November receiving the least rainfall.  The hottest month in this season is September and the coolest is November.  The amount of daily sunshine hours do decrease steadily, down to 4 hours of sunshine in November. 

In Winter temperatures reach highs of 9⁰C.  Rainfall is a lot less this season with an average of 6 to 7 days of rain per month.  This season receives the least rain all year.  You can expect between 3 and 5 hours of sunshine hours per day.  The coldest months are December and January.  

In Spring temperatures slowly start rising again reaching average highs of 21⁰C in May.  The coldest month in this season is March.  The month of May is the wettest month in this season but then precipitation does start to decrease moving into summer.  Daily sunshine hours begin to increase again and you can expect between 8 and 9 hours of daily sunshine hours.
