One can't talk about the Netherlands and not mention cheese. The Dutch have been making cheese since 800B.C. In fact, the Netherlands is the largest exporter of cheese in the world. However, not all of it leaves the country, the Dutch also eat an average of 21 kilograms of cheese per person per year.  The majority of Dutch cheeses are semi-hard or hard and with Gouda or Edam as the two most popular.

In December on New Year's Eve, the Dutch serve Oliebollen as a treat. These are similar to a donut and typically served with powdered sugar. In essence, they are deep fried balls of dough made in a traditional plain way or with raisins and/or currents inside.

Snert is another popular Dutch food and is made of split peas, celery, leeks, carrots and pork. This pea soup is very thick and traditionally eaten in the winter months as it is very warming.

If visitors want to brave the chilly December air for an evening cocktail, Chet's Jazz Café is a good choice. Designed like a 1920's speakeasy, the bar features musicians on Fridays and Saturdays as well as a large selection of wines and other spirits.

If a visitor is looking for more rock and roll, Pollux might be the choice. This late-night dive bar isn't for everyone, but it can be a fun venue to spend a few hours.
