Alto Minho - Portugal
Along the northern Portuguese border with Spain lies the hilly wine country of Alto Minho, where people sip their unique brand of wine as if it were water. The area is conducive to grape growing and cycling, offering a cool 19th century feel with its small villages, stonewall-lined routes and relaxed lifestyle. There's a lack of tourism here, but because of the great bike opportunities, several companies offer one or two-week tours of over 350 miles through all the important junctures.
A highlight for most is not the easy traveling that the quiet streets provide, but the rich manor houses, which can be seen along them. Some of the owners even offer accommodation, adding to your true Portuguese experience.Must-see: The private vineyards in Alto Minho, where you must also sample the local wine, known as vinho verde (green wine).
