Weather Overview for Liverpool
Liverpool, birthplace of The Beatles, is one of the largest cities in
northern England and lies upon the River Mersey where it meets
the Irish Sea.
The UK
receives a temperate maritime climate and Liverpool is no exception. There are
four distinct seasons but no extremes of temperature. Liverpool’s coastal
location and relatively high elevation (230 ft above sea level) means that it
can experience significant rainfall. Rainfall is consistent year round:
quite high in frequency and volume for a UK location. The weather is pretty
changeable from day to day and even hour to hour.
Beyond the urban area is the beautiful countryside which includes over
35,000 hectares of nature conservation sites and over 30 miles of beaches and
coastline. Liverpool lies upon
the Mersey Waterfront Regional Park which stretches
for approximately 135 km along the Merseyside coast, taking in the elegant
Victorian promenade of Southport. Liverpool is
also home to some of the most naturally challenging golf courses in the world,
which in 2006 and played host to the Open Championship.
Summer in Liverpool doesn’t get particularly hot, but can
occasionally reach over 20°C in the peak months. The average
temperature is 14°C to 16°C with July and August seeing
average highs of 19°C and average lows of around 12°C. Sunshine levels are
highest in June at six hours per day – this is also the annual high. It becomes
more overcast and the days get shorter as the season progresses, reducing
sunshine hours to four per day by September. It rains regularly and showers
become increasingly heavy towards the end of the season.
Overcast, damp days occur often, but in summer there are also a large
number of bright, clear days. So come prepared with your sunglasses as well as
your umbrella.
Autumn is the wettest time
of year. From September till November, the average rainfall
level stays above 100mm per month. It rains on more than half of the days
in each month. While showers are heavier than the usual irritating drizzle seen
across Britain, the constant rain can be a bit trying. Sunshine levels reduce
to two hours per day in November. Temperatures decrease quite quickly, falling
from an average
high of 17°C in September to one of 9°C in November. Night times usually
see temperatures below 10°C from mid September and November even sees some
frost.
Winter in Liverpool really sets in around mid November, and continues
through until the end of February. Temperatures drop down to averages of about
4°C. January
is the coldest month seeing average highs of 7°C and lows of a brisk 2°C.
Frosts are common but snow is rare, only falling a couple of times in the
season and rarely settling. Rainfall remains high, falling frequently, but
reduces in February. Sunshine levels are embarrassing.
Spring sees Liverpool at its ‘driest,’ with 55 – 65mm of rainfall
recorded monthly throughout the season, in comparison to the 100mm and up recorded
monthly throughout autumn and winter. Showers are still frequent but generally
quite light. It warms up slowly, getting to an average high of 9°C in March, 12°C
in April and 15°C in May. The average low temperature does not get above 10°C
for the entire season. Sunshine
levels leap up, reaching the annual maximum of six per day in May. Spring is
a great time to visit the home of some of England’s best music acts. The
flowers are blooming, the sun reappears and the rain has died off!
