Kos is a sunny island which experiences long, hot dry summers and mild winters. Like many of the Greek Islands the shoulder seasons of autumn and spring with holidaymakers hoping to avoid the crowds and scorching temperatures of the summer.

Kos is a Greek Island located 4km off the coast of Turkey in the north-eastern Aegean Sea. It is part of the South Sporades group of the Dodecanese Greek Islands, and enjoys a climate that is typified by a combination of semi-tropical and Mediterranean conditions.

Summer begins around May with temperatures averaging 21°C, before moving up to an average temperature of 25°C in June. Daytimes are generally in the high 20s and nights in the low 20s. July and August see Kos’ hottest temperatures and it is not uncommon for the region to experience temperatures in excess of 40°C, though it barometer generally hovers around the mid to low 30’s. A sea breeze helps to keep things comfortable but many will find it too hot in the peak of the day.

Like most of Greece, the region is blessed with sunny days - the height of summer sees up to 14 hours of uninterrupted sunlight per day.

If you are not a fan of the hot weather it is best to visit Kos in the shoulder seasons of spring and autumn when the weather is less extreme: warm, sunny days, cool evenings and moderate rainfall. The benefit of visiting during this time is that you avoid the peak summer crowds. The sea is still warm in autumn so swimming is possible but it is quite chilly in spring.

Winters are mild with the coolest months being January and February when the mercury falls to about 13°C in the day and 8°C at night. There is frequent rain from October to May, with the majority falling in December. The island still sees, on average, 4 to 5 hours of sunshine per day during winter which is enviable in comparison to many other European holiday destinations in winter.

By March the rainfall has decreased and the island welcomes spring. March sees an average temperature of 12°C, before rising to 15°C in April and a pleasant 20°C in May.
