Weather Overview for Dublin

Dublin is the Republic of Ireland’s vibrant capital city. It sits on the east coast in a rain shelter which results in it seeing almost half as much rain as areas on the west coast - so dispel any thoughts you’ve had about Dublin being the wettest place in Ireland as this is not the case!

The climate in Dublin is a maritime temperate climate that, like the rest of the Ireland, doesn’t see any temperature extremes. It is home to cool summers and mild winters, and due to its easterly location it is sheltered from the heavy storms borne on Atlantic winds.

In saying this, occasionally Dublin is hit by strong winds that blow across from the Atlantic, though the storms are certainly not as severe here as they are in other parts of the country. On the odd occasion they can reach gale force speeds; Christmas Eve 1997 saw a region not far out of Dublin hit by winds that gathered up to speeds of 151 kmph!

Rainfall

December and August are generally the wettest months of the year, recording 74mm of precipitation on average per month. April is, on average, the driest month of the year, recording 45mm of precipitation for the whole month. Across the whole year, however, every month will generally record in excess of 40mm. There will usually be about 11 or 12 days which see rainfall each month, though some days will see nothing more than a very light short shower which shouldn’t disrupt your day.

There are plenty of things to keep you busy if visiting Dublin and finding yourself in the midst of a rainy windy day: take in the city streets; the beautiful grounds of the city’s many university’s; or take a visit to the original Guinness Brewery - don't worry it'll be here for a while as it has a 9,000 year lease on it's property.

Temperature

The average maximum temperature in January, the middle of winter, is about 8°C while July sees average maximums of about 20°C. From May through until June is when Dublin basks in the most hours of uninterrupted sunlight. Because of its northerly latitude, in the height of summer days will have about 19 hours of daylight before the sun sets. In winter, however, the days are short and in the peak of winter only around two hours of sunshine are seen per day on average.  

Dublin is affected by the urban heat phenomenon, also seen in London, which means the inner city will be a few degrees warmer than rural and suburban areas. The heat is stored up by the buildings and is released throughout the days, keeping it warmer.
